Special Kids Day
| Guests who participate in our "Special Kids Day" are mentally and physically challenged members of our local communities. Our "Special Kids" are children and adults from Broome, Tioga, Cortland, Tompkins and Chenango Counties. Our Special People come from various area camps, institutions, schools, group and nursing homes, and from private homes. The response to our "Special Kids Day" program has been enthusiastic. In 2008, for example, over 2600 clients and support staff were able to join us and spend a day at the fair at no cost to them.|
Each invited "Special Kid" receives free: admission, amusement rides, an All-American Fair lunch (provided by our wonderfully generous concessionaires), a treat of popcorn, cotton candy or a snow cone, and even a special stuffed toy for them to take home as of reminder of their "Special Day" at the fair. In addition to enjoying all of the free exhibits and personal entertainment (including clowns!), our guests get to experience up close the sights and sounds of agriculture and livestock, such as horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and rabbits.
For many this is the most recreational enjoyment they receive all year. As one might imagine, due to the special needs of many of our guests, the cost of this eventful day exceeds the norm, since most require one-on-one assistance throughout their stay for their care and safety. To support this effort of bringing the memories of a lifetime to those in need, the Broome County Fair Special Kids Fund has been registered as a New York State Charitable Organization. For more information on how you or your company can make a donation or get involved as a sponsor or volunteer, contact Tom Decker or Chuck Franklin in the Fair Office at (607) 692-4149, or make a PayPal donation on the top right corner of this website today. Please not that donations to the Special Kids Day fund are not tax deductible.
